The Ford Kuga is a popular model in the small SUV class. Like Ford’s other offerings, it provides a fun driving experience, paired with plenty of practicality.
With recent struggles in the industry and the pandemic leaving long delays in its wake, getting hold of a Kuga might be challenging. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any great alternatives out there – quite the opposite.
If you had your heart set on this Ford model, it’s worth considering similar cars that pack the same punch. Read on to find out how the alternatives compare for performance, design and fuel economy below.
Volkswagen Tiguan
Volkswagen is always a top choice for drivers looking to get a great driving experience paired with the broad appeal of the brand itself. This model is spacious, stylish and bears all the hallmarks of a comfortable SUV.
Its external appeal captures the lines and detailing of Volkswagen’s signature design. Up against the Kuga, it falls into a similar ballpark. However, Ford’s prominent grille and striking headlights give it that edge.
The interior look depends on the model you choose. Range toppers come with plusher upholstery and stylish accents. In contrast, the standard models can feel a little flat. Both models have an 8-inch touchscreen, but the Tiguan has a slightly larger option in different trim levels.
Performance comparison
The VW Tiguan is available in various engine sizes. The base model has a 1.5-litre petrol engine in 130hp or 150hp. Alternatively, you can opt for the larger 2.0-litre 320hp Tiguan R performance SUV. Ford has a very similar range and, like Volkswagen, offers a hybrid version too. In a sprint from 0-62mph, the Tiguan pips the Kuga to the top spot with a time between 4.7 and 10.6 seconds, depending on the model.
Economy comparison
With the range of petrol and diesel models available, you get around 40-50mpg in the two-wheel-drive options. This falls slightly when you opt for the four-wheel-drive option. The Kuga delivers around the same fuel economy. However, the Ford does come out on top for combined mpg on the hybrid version. Both plug-in hybrids give you around 35 miles on electric-only, which is ideal for shorter journeys.
Price comparison
The Kuga and the Tiguan work out comparable prices depending on the model you choose. However, with similar features and fuel economy, the starting deals of £325.99 per month for the Kuga and £314.99 per month for the Tiguan, could make it a hard decision.
Renault Kadjar
Renault has upped their SUV credentials with the introduction of the Kadjar. The car maker describes the model as an adventurous and athletic design and its styling certainly backs this up.
The exterior showcases a new front grille with a large logo accent and the LED lighting and prominent alloy wheels also make a statement on the road. Its shape feels similar to the Kuga, but the Ford has an edgier look overall.
Taking a seat in the cabin is slightly underwhelming compared to rival SUVs. However, the infotainment display is quite impressive, although, the Kuga slightly outdoes it for useability and style.
Performance comparison
Another similarity with the Kuga is the option to choose between petrol and diesel models. The base-level petrol model is a good option for everyday driving. However, the diesel model will give you more miles to the gallon.
The Kadjar isn’t going to be breaking any speed records. Still, it travels 0-60mph in just over 10 seconds, comparable to the Kuga.
Economy comparison
If you’re looking for a car that gives you great mpg, then the Kadjar is a safe option. It performs close to the Kuga with around 42mpg in petrol models and up to 55mpg for diesel. The Kuga is also available in a plug-in hybrid, which makes your money go further. For those wondering if Renault has something up their sleeve for the Kadjar, a new hybrid-only replacement named the Austral will take its place from 2023.
Price comparison
Compared to its rivals, the Kadjar comes in a little cheaper at £303.99 per month. This is excellent value for anyone wanting a fun and roomy small family SUV for a range of driving adventures.
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
The Toyota RAV4 was a popular small SUV that came onto the market back in the 90s. Still going strong today, Toyota has upped the ante with a plug-in hybrid version to go against similar models in its class.
The exterior gives us an angular look with a large and striking front grille. It’s also available in a variety of classic colours in solid or bi-tone finishes. Inside, it doesn’t quite match the presence the exterior gives, but the crisp lines and shiny accents give it a stylish vibe.
The infotainment system doesn’t quite compare to the Kuga’s but it’s spacious inside and there’s plenty of room for passengers. Even with its electric battery, boot space is up to 612 litres and with the seats down, you’ll get an impressive 1,534 litres – plenty of room for luggage, shopping or even bikes.
Performance comparison
There’s not much choice when it comes to engines for the RAV4 – in fact, only one to be precise. But that doesn’t deter from its reasonable performance. An electric motor and battery back a 2.5-litre engine, and in a sprint to 60mph, you’ll get there in just over eight seconds.
Economy performance
This plug-in hybrid model provides an impressive 50.4mpg. Plus, you have access to the electric motor, which gives you around 46 miles of range. This is more than the Kuga and means you can drive a little longer on electric-only, saving you money on fuel.
Price comparison
With its striking features and good fuel economy, you pay slightly more to lease this model than the Kuga. However, with more range available, the savings could prove beneficial. Prices start from £399.99 per month.
Skoda Karoq
Skoda is known for its simple yet practical designs, and the Karoq is exactly that. While it might not win any awards for an eye-catching appearance, it’s certainly a car that provides functionality and reliability for all types of driving adventures.
Its simple styling offers sleek lines and an understated aesthetic. So, if edgier lines and a sharper design are your thing, the Kuga could pip it to the top spot. Again, inside, there’s a host of solid yet practical interior features. Plus, the 8-inch touchscreen gives you everything you need for driver convenience. One of its top features is the space available for everyone. You also have access to a huge boot that, when the seats are folded down, is incredibly spacious compared to the Kuga.
Performance
The choice of petrol and diesel engines gives you a range of performance figures. However, generally, this car reaches 60mph in around eight seconds. Each option provides a comfortable ride and it's more than capable on shorter and longer journeys, even if you stack the boot to the rafters.
Economy comparison
The Karoq is on par with the Kuga for fuel economy, giving you around 40mpg. But, this model doesn’t come in a hybrid like the Kuga, so it won’t give you the range-topping mpg in comparison.
Price comparison
For its functionality, size and fuel economy, it’s great value for money compared to rival models, with prices starting at £278.99 a month.
