Toyota continues its cutting-edge design and striking road appeal with the new C-HR compact SUV.
This versatile, stylish and economical hybrid cuts the mustard against such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and Peugeot 3008. Plus, it’s larger than the Yaris Cross if you’re looking for a roomier vehicle with a similar aesthetic.
As you’d expect from Toyota, there’s a lot of tech on board. Its build quality makes it a great car for the money too. What’s more, the fuel-efficient hybrid engine options mean it’s cost-effective to run while you enjoy the benefits of a smooth ride and comfortable driving experience.

Exterior features
The first thing you’ll notice about this compact SUV is its looks. It has somewhat of a sci-fi feel to it, and unlike other hatchback cars, its suspension is raised slightly to give a commanding road presence.
The distinctive strong lines and angular headlights make the car look sporty, this is complemented by its sloping roofline. This model comes in four trim levels – Icon, Design, Excel and GR Sport. As you move up the range, you get a sportier look with the GR Sport’s signature 19-inch machined black alloys, scuff plates, smoke-tinted headlights and badging.
Interior features
On the inside of the C-HR, you’ll find similar aesthetics to the outside – it’s all pretty sleek. The materials used are high quality, but there are a few harder plastics in the lower sections. However, this doesn’t affect overall build quality. Ambient lighting also enhances the overall interior look.
Seating is comfortable all around, and there’s the option to upgrade to Alcantara seats in the GR Sport trim. All leather interior features in the Excel trim, but these are an optional extra in the Design variant.
Passengers also enjoy a comfy ride, but tall individuals may have to watch the sloping roof and inside grab handles while getting into the rear. For its compact size, three people can happily fit in the back, and ISOFIX mounting points come as standard, ready for infant car seats.
As you head into the boot, you can expect a reasonable capacity for storage. There are 377 litres and more with the rear seats down. However, this doesn’t quite hit the mark compared to some rivals that offer more in the back.
Performance
The Toyota C-HR comes with two engine options – both hybrids. A 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre petrol engine with self-charging technology complements the performance.
Its 1.8-litre engine is the same as you’d find in a Toyota Prius, and it kicks out 121hp, offering an 11-second sprint to 62mph. Opting for the 2.0-litre engine takes this down to eight seconds, but you lose a little fuel economy with the increased power.
For its compact size, this car is ideal for urban driving situations, and the slightly elevated driving position ensures good visibility. However, there’s a slight drawback if you’re hoping to reverse into awkward spots, and that’s the small rear window and huge back pillars. These areas can make getting a good view of the rear more challenging.
Both engines offer ample oomph on the motorway for a smooth ride without any struggles. But, at peak performance, you may hear the hum of the CVT transmission, which is standard across the range.
Fuel economy
Much like Toyota’s other hybrid drivetrains, the C-HR models provide excellent fuel efficiency in all driving conditions. The 1.8-litre engine offers around 53-57mpg. In comparison, the 2.0-litre option comes down slightly at 49-53mpg due to the increased power.
Both engine variants have low emissions, bringing road tax fees down. Plus, with its self-charging electric power, you get a short burst of all-electric motoring to make your ride even more economical.
Smart driver assistance technology
Toyota doesn’t scrimp when it comes to onboard safety and driver assistance technology. In the newer models, there are several features that were initially extras at its launch, which provides more value for money.
Each trim level is equipped with adaptive cruise control, a rear-view camera and Toyota’s Safety Sense 2 system. This includes everything from pre-collision and lane-keeping features to road sign assistance.
For additional peace of mind, this model scored a five-star rating when tested at Euro NCAP.
Infotainment
The infotainment system on the C-HR differs slightly depending on the trim level. The Icon variant has an 8.0-inch touchscreen, but this runs on Toyota’s older multimedia system. All other trims get the Smart Connect system, although they are all 8.0-inch screens.
The models with Smart Connect provide wireless connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard. You also get sat-nav and voice assistance in making life simpler. In addition, this interface incorporates hand-control knobs for volume and climate control settings.
What’s the Toyota C-HR like to drive?
Aside from the minor niggles with the faint noise you might hear at optimal performance, this car offers a smooth and practical ride with the added bonus of style and road appeal.
Toyota provides a range of extras as standard, which offers additional value for money. Plus, its hybrid technology ensures fuel efficiency whether driving in town or on the motorway.
Overall, if you’re looking for a compact SUV that provides a fun, versatile and economical ride, the C-HR ticks all the right boxes.
